App review mining
Find what competing apps leave users asking for.
ASO Studio mines App Store reviews to surface complaints and feature requests from competing apps. Read the user's wording, the app it came from, its rating, and its date, then investigate recurring needs in your market. This helps you decide what to build, improve, or explain more clearly in your listing.
When to use it
Useful for indie developers researching an app idea or planning the next product improvement. Start with a relevant category or the apps in Your Space, so the reviews come from products serving the audience you care about.
How the workflow works
- 01
Choose relevant competitors
Start with apps that solve the same job as yours. Your Space assembles competitors from your tracked searches, while category research offers a broader starting point. Check the products yourself before treating every app in the results as a direct rival.
- 02
Separate requests from complaints
Review mining identifies user-stated wants and pain points in recent public reviews. An explicit request for a missing capability is different from frustration with a bug, a subscription, or an existing workflow. Keeping those distinctions helps you decide whether the response belongs in your roadmap, reliability work, pricing, or positioning.
- 03
Read the evidence behind a theme
Inspect the original review wording alongside the source app, star rating, and date. Look for the same need across relevant apps, and check whether a recent update already addressed it. A short extracted sentence is a starting point for reading the context, not a substitute for it.
- 04
Turn the finding into a testable idea
Write down the user's job and the smallest improvement that could solve it. Compare the finding with search demand and the alternatives already available. Before building a large feature, test whether prospective users share the problem and whether your proposed solution would change their behavior.
A product question you can act on
Suppose relevant reviews ask for a shared watchlist. That is an illustrative example, not a finding about today's market. Check whether the reviewers mean family sharing, recommendations, or deciding what to watch together, then test the specific workflow they need. Counting every mention of sharing as the same feature would lose the most useful part of the evidence.
What the evidence can tell you
ASO Studio's review mining looks for user-stated requests and complaints in public review samples, retaining the wording and source context. Use the extracted evidence to examine a theme before turning it into a product decision.
The review sample is not the whole customer base. Reviewers select themselves, and a repeated complaint does not tell you what percentage of customers experience it.
A mined request is evidence that someone asked. It is not proof that no competitor provides the feature, that the app still lacks it, or that people will pay for your implementation.
This workflow researches public App Store reviews. It does not provide a customer-support inbox, respond to reviews, or show competitors' ad creatives and paywalls.
App review mining
Common questions.
Can ASO Studio analyze competitors' App Store reviews?
Yes. It reads public review samples to surface feature requests and complaints. The findings retain review text and source context so you can investigate why the user asked.
Is review mining the same as a star-rating average?
No. A star average summarizes ratings. Review mining examines the words people write to find problems, requests, and reasons for frustration. ASO Studio uses this evidence for competitor and product research.
Can I ask an AI assistant to help with review research?
Yes. Through ASO Studio's MCP connection, a compatible assistant can research competitors and read public reviews. Ask it to keep original wording separate from its interpretation and to name the source apps.
